Constipation (Beware - TMI)

If you've ever dealt with or had constipation - you know it is not comfortable in the least!  It is the pits!  Lottie has been dealing with bouts of constipation for the last couple of months and it literally breaks my heart to see her straining and maneuvering in these awkward positions to try to get a good poop out.

She literally will either lay down on the floor in a plank like position straining and making that "UGGHHH" noise or she will take both legs, push them to one side while holding on to the couch, chair, whatever she can get her hands on to help balance her out.  All while letting out little cries, whimpers just eating away at our hearts.

Since her issue with constipation, we have tried the following:

  • given her straight apple juice (non-diluted)
  • plenty of fruits
  • cut down on dairy products
  • PRUNES
  • Extra fiber granola bars
While none of the above seemed to help with her issue, we finally decided to address it with her doctor.  Last Friday night was HELL!  She must have cried for three hours straight at home, not to mention cried about all afternoon at day care.  When I picked Lottie up last Friday from day care, she was laying on her cot with her blanket and pacifier.  I immediately knew something was not right.  They explained that she had been constipated and just wanted to lay down.  She looked so pitiful!

At any rate, we finally got her down to sleep on Friday night.  The next morning was no different.  She was up bright and early still feeling very uncomfortable.  Thankfully our pediatrician's office is open a half day on Saturday so I called to schedule an appointment.

During her examination (23 lbs BTW), the doctor felt her belly and said that everything felt normal.  Afterwards, he did the unthinkable and stuck his finger where it did NOT belong.  Of course Lottie scowled and cried and practically screamed at him and his hand to stay the heck away from her.  He advised us to try and switch up her daily food intake and gave us a prescription for her pooping issue.

After getting her prescription filled and changing her milk from regular Whole Milk to Lactose free whole milk, this week has definitely gone a lot smoother.  She is taking at least 2 to 3 small little poops a day which makes her and this mama very happy.  With the prescription we were given, she is to take 1 tsp daily for 1 month.

Hopefully this little pooping trend will continue!

If anyone has any suggestions, ideas, etc. to get this kid pooping, please SHARE with me!  I really don't want to depend on a script to keep her regular, especially after the month is up!

POOP - It makes a kid happy!
